Pakistan Aims to End Stigma Surrounding Epilepsy on International Epilepsy Day
The Neurology Awareness and Research Foundation (NARF) and Epilepsy Foundation Pakistan held a news conference on International Epilepsy Day to bring attention to the stigma that those living with epilepsy face. The presser included speeches from Chairperson EFP Dr Fowzia Siddiqui, NARF’s Prof Dr Muhammad Wasay and Prof Dr Abdul Malik.
In Pakistan, 2 million people struggle with this neurological disorder and face immense social stigmas, including difficulty forming social connections and depression. Epilepsy is most common in people under 30 and is more prevalent in rural areas. Unfortunately, many myths and legends surround the treatment of epilepsy, making it challenging to seek proper treatment.
The doctors at the conference urged the government to provide subsidies and make quality medicines more accessible to patients.
