Oops, He Did It Again: Former UC Basketball Coach Bob Huggins Resigns from West Virginia After DUI Arrest

Former UC basketball coach Bob Huggins is no stranger to DUI charges, having been previously suspended from his then-University of Cincinnati team in 2004. Unfortunately, Huggins found himself in similar trouble on Friday night, resulting in his resignation as the head coach of West Virginia University men’s basketball.

The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. in Pittsburgh, when a black SUV was spotted in the middle of the road with a flat tire and the driver’s side door open. Upon arrival, officers noticed Huggins struggling and suspected that he was intoxicated. Field sobriety tests were performed, which Huggins failed, leading to his arrest on suspicion of DUI.

Later, a garbage bag filled with empty beer cans was found in the vehicle, as well as a cooler that was still wet. Huggins blew a 2.10 on the breathalyzer test, which is more than twice the legal limit for a DUI conviction in Pennsylvania.

West Virginia officials have confirmed that Huggins will resign from his position, and discussions regarding his departure are currently underway. Huggins had a successful career, winning 935 games overall in his college career and taking both West Virginia and Cincinnati to the Final Four in 2010 and 1992, respectively. He was also inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame last year.

However, 2023 has been a difficult year for Huggins off the court. He used a homophobic slur when referring to Xavier University fans on a radio show earlier this year, resulting in a suspension from West Virginia President E. Gordon Gee for the first three games of the season. Huggins’ contract has also been amended to be year-by-year, and he and all current and future athletic coaches are required to attend training sessions with West Virginia’s LGBTQ+ Center.

While Huggins apologized and promised a donation to Xavier as a result of the incident, the recent DUI charges add yet another mark against his career. It remains to be seen what the future holds for the former UC basketball coach, but for now, he’s out of a job.
