Mother Accidentally Shoots Son While Aiming at Dog, Sparking Haunting Nightmares and Raising Questions

In a startling turn of events on May 29, a distressing incident unfolded as a mother now faces charges after mistakenly shooting her own son while attempting to shoot a loose dog. The incident took place at 700 Dunham Road in Texas, where a resident, responding to his 6-month-old boxer puppy Bruno’s intense barking, unknowingly opened the door, believing it to be his brother.

“I came out of my house because Bruno was barking and barking. I thought my brother was coming,” the man revealed to ABC13. “So, I open the door just a little bit and he comes running out.” Coincidentally, 24-year-old Angelia Vargas and her son were riding their bikes nearby when they noticed Bruno wandering freely.

Captured by a doorbell camera, the footage documented Bruno’s owner attempting to entice the dog back inside. However, in a tragic twist, gunshots shattered the air, followed by a horrifying scream. While trying to aim at Bruno, Angelia unintentionally shot her 5-year-old son. One of the three bullets fired by Angelia grazed Bruno’s leg, leaving him on the path to recovery. Unfortunately, the young boy suffered a non-life-threatening injury to his abdomen but is currently in stable condition after receiving medical treatment.

The Houston Police Department’s investigation revealed that Angelia, the child’s mother, had discharged three shots from a small-caliber pistol, intending to target the loose dog across the street. Regrettably, one of the bullets ricocheted, striking her son. As a result, Angelia was arrested and charged with the incident, as it was deemed dangerous due to firing across a public roadway and towards two occupied houses.

Still shaken by the tragic turn of events, the pet owner expressed his belief that the situation could have been handled differently. “You know, she was there, her husband was there, I was there, nothing would have happened. Nothing bad like that,” he lamented to ABC13. The incident has haunted him, vivid nightmares echoing the cries of the little boy. This traumatic event serves as a poignant reminder of the severe consequences that arise from reckless actions, leaving scars that may never fade.
