Ashton Kutcher has been struggling with red carpet appearances since his 2019 health scare. During an appearance on the Chicks in the Office podcast, the 45-year-old actor revealed that he is hard of hearing in one ear and can only hear in the other due to a rare form of vasculitis. Kutcher explained that hearing loss makes red carpets difficult as he can’t hear who is yelling his name.
The actor first spoke about his health struggle during an episode of National Geographic’s Running Wild with Bear Grylls: The Challenge in August. Vasculitis is a condition that causes inflammation and narrowing of blood vessels, which can cause damage to organs and tissue. Kutcher’s vasculitis caused vision issues, hearing loss, loss of balance, and difficulty walking.
He has since made “impressive” progress with both his vision and hearing, and he credits his wife, Mila Kunis, for helping him through the experience. Kutcher said he feels “lucky to be alive” and is working to regain the health he once had.
