Horrifying moment car is swallowed by a sinkhole, flooded road and sent the vehicle into deep mud on Phoenix road

The terrifying moment a car was swallowed by a sinkhole after crashing into a fire hydrant in Phoenix was caught on camera. 

Around 7.30am on Wednesday near 75th and Virginia Avenues, two cars crashed and collided with a fire hydrant, sending water flooding into the road. 

The water turned the ground swampy, opening up a sinkhole which then enveloped one of the cars. 

Horrifying video shows the car slowly being sucked under ground until only its roof is visible. 

One woman was taken to hospital in a critical condition while three others suffered minor injuries. 

Video from the scene shows one car with a smashed bumper sitting at an angle on the road. 

The other car is just visible off the side of the road in a mud patch. 

One of the cars hit a fire hydrant in the collision which began pouring water onto the road and the surrounding muddy ground. 

The mud thickened as water covered the road and patches then completely filled with water, turning into a sinkhole.

The car off the side of the road slowly disappeared from view as it was sucked beneath the surface of the muddy water and soil. 

The drivers have not yet been identified and it is not clear whether they were trapped in the car as it was submerged.  

Witness Devin Friebe told Fox10: ‘I came into the office to work this morning and I didn’t have any parking because the whole place was flooded.’

Another witness, Marlene Friebe, added: ‘I’ve only ever seen something like this on the news, so seeing it in person is like, whoa!’ 

The intersection was shut down as police investigated the crash. 

Sharing footage from the scene, Fox journalist Lauren Clark said: ‘Unbelievable sight here off 75th Ave and Virginia: a car swallowed in a mud pit. 

‘Officials say a car crashed into a fire hydrant that was gushing water, causing a massive flooding situation.’
