Here are several reasons why you should always put a coin in the freezer before leaving the house
Have you ever returned from work or a vacation to find that the time on your digital clock is off?
You might think, “There was no power outage, of course.” But you just can’t determine how long the power was out, even if it did happen.
It could have lasted for days, causing food to defrost and spoil. When the power comes back, the food refreezes, and you hardly notice that it had thawed.
This can be quite hazardous, as some foods have a high potential for spreading harmful bacteria like salmonella.
Today, we’ll show you a method to determine whether and how long your freezer was without power.
By allowing the food to defrost for an excessive amount of time, you can determine whether it has gone bad.
Three simple things are required for this:
– One cup of water
– A coin
Fill a cup with water and put it in the freezer to freeze. Once it’s frozen solid, place a coin on top of the ice and put the cup back in the freezer.
Before consuming any food from the freezer when you return from your trip, check to see where the coin is!
If the coin is still on top, everything is fine; but if it has sunk to the bottom of the cup, it indicates that there was a prolonged power outage during which the ice melted completely. It is best to avoid eating any food that was in the freezer.
An amazing trick that is simple to use, especially helpful for long trips!
