Nikita Piil, 31, faced a life-altering moment when her two Rottweilers, Harlem and Bronx, brutally attacked her at her Success home in Perth on September 16. Almost losing her life, she suffered severe injuries to her arm, legs, and head, undergoing at least five life-saving operations. Police were compelled to shoot Bronx during the attack, leading to his subsequent euthanasia. Six weeks later, Harlem faced the same fate as Ms. Piil quietly turned her social media profiles into tributes for her beloved pets. In a poignant Facebook post, she wrote, ‘My existence is forever altered, irrevocably changed in your absence, I’m broken. Harlem & Bronx.’ On Instagram, she expressed, ‘No words can aptly capture the torment that engulfs my heart. Harlem & Bronx – you made life, worth living. While the tragic incident has left Ms. Piil shattered, her love for the Rottweilers endures. Despite the ordeal, she turned Harlem over to the City of Cockburn’s animal management center as complying with the state’s dangerous dogs requirements became the only option to spare him from euthanasia. The emotional toll is evident in her tributes as she acknowledged the profound impact on her life. ‘I will never stop loving you,’ she declared. The council confirmed Harlem’s humane euthanasia on October 25.

Neighbors, alerted by Ms. Piil’s screams, attempted to intervene during the horrifying attack but were unable to access the backyard safely. Bryn Spencer, a neighbor, recounted the harrowing experience, stating, ‘I was contemplating jumping the fence and getting in there to try to rescue her, but, obviously, there were two Rottweilers in there.’ The City of Cockburn had received prior complaints about the Rottweilers’ excessive barking, although no reported incidents of attacks had occurred before September 16.
