Las Vegas Home Featuring Extensive Underground Party Bunker Faces Difficulty in Attracting Buyers – Price Slashed from $18 Million to Only $6 Million

A Las Vegas residence, reminiscent of the Playboy Mansion, is struggling to find a buyer despite a significant $12 million price reduction. The famed ‘Las Vegas Underground House,’ initially listed at $18 million, hit the market again in February 2023 with a lowered price of $6 million. Originally built as a Cold War bomb shelter by Jerry Henderson in 1978, the property transformed into a party haven. Despite renovations by the Society for the Preservation of Near Extinct Species, who purchased it in 2014, the underground house, now labeled an ‘underground swinger house,’ faces challenges attracting buyers, with critics citing its lack of peek-through windows.

The property, located on 3970 Spencer Street, is not only a unique home but also carries historical significance. Jerry Henderson, the director of Avon Products, built the nearly 17,000-foot underground shelter, which later became a pool party venue. The property underwent significant renovations by the Society for the Preservation of Near Extinct Species, aiming to make it more livable in modern times, complete with internet, cable, and cellphone reception.

Despite all of the renovations, the society kept all of the decorations the same in every room. However, the essential fixes performed over the years were to make sure the underground home would get cellphone reception, cable, and internet

Despite the Society’s efforts to maintain the 1970s aesthetic of the house, it remains on the market. Tee Thompson, a society member overseeing the property, emphasized the preservation of the original style. However, the property’s unique features, like murals, pink curtains, and faux trees, might contribute to its struggle in finding a buyer, as some potential buyers may not be attracted to such distinctive elements.

The underground house has not only historical significance but has also served as a set for Imagine Dragon’s 2021 song “Monday” and was featured on Netflix as one of the world’s weirdest homes. However, the property’s recent reputation as an ‘underground swinger house’ may have added an unexpected layer of complexity to its sale. His wife had a regular-style house built on top of the underground home after her husband’s death and lived there until her death in 1989.

Despite the property’s intriguing history and the efforts to preserve its original style, the $12 million price reduction has not yet translated into a sale. The listing agent, Stephan LaForge, justifies the reduced price, stating that it reflects the cost to rebuild the new home.
