Prominent Lawyer Indicted on Fresh Sexual Assault Charges Linked to Decades-Old Boston Rapes
In a recent development, a lawyer who was arrested last month in connection with alleged sexual assaults from the past has now been accused of committing additional attacks in Boston during a similar timeframe. The accused, Matthew Nilo, 35, hailing from New Jersey, has been indicted by a grand jury on multiple charges, including rape, as announced by Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden.
According to the district attorney’s office, these incidents followed a distinct pattern, with the victims being targeted while walking alone in the darkness, either at night or in the early morning. Nilo has been indicted on charges of rape, aggravated rape, assault with intent to rape, and indecent assault and battery. These alleged attacks took place between January 2007 and July 2008 in Boston’s North End, where Nilo resided at the time. Notably, one of the victims was purportedly assaulted on two separate occasions, just 11 days apart.
DNA evidence played a pivotal role in the new indictments, stated District Attorney Hayden. The collaborative efforts of the Boston Police Department and the FBI were instrumental in securing these indictments, allowing the survivors of these crimes to witness their assailant being held accountable for his actions, added Hayden.
Nilo, through his attorney Joseph Cataldo, released a statement denying the recent allegations and expressing his intention to legally challenge the government’s case.
These fresh charges follow Nilo’s arrest last month in New Jersey in connection with four other sexual assaults that reportedly occurred between August 2007 and December 2008 in Boston’s Charlestown neighborhood. The Boston Police Department stated that all four cases were linked by DNA evidence, and genetic genealogy techniques aided in Nilo’s identification and subsequent arrest.
During his arraignment earlier this month, Nilo pleaded not guilty to three counts of aggravated rape, two counts of kidnapping, one count of assault with intent to rape, and one count of indecent assault and battery. He was released on June 15 after posting a $500,000 cash bail. As part of his bail conditions, Nilo is required to wear a GPS tracker, surrender his passport, and refrain from any contact with the alleged victims.
Nilo’s next court appearance is scheduled for July 13, during which he will face formal charges related to the recent accusations, according to prosecutors.
Meanwhile, authorities in Madison, Wisconsin, have also revealed their collaboration with Boston police in reviewing old cases to determine if there are any potential connections to Nilo, who attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
The investigation into these serious allegations continues, with law enforcement agencies diligently working to uncover the truth and provide justice for the victims.
